Tent-making Fruit Bats (Uroderma bilobatum)

These bats are roosting under a palm leaf they cut. They chew on the leaf so that it folds in a way to make them a tent. This tent keeps the rain off and gives them a nice place to hide during the day.

There are many different kinds of tent-making bats, but all of them are fruit eaters, or "fruigivores." They make their tent near a fruit tree and roost under it during the days, and go to the tree to eat fruits at night.

In the tropical rain forest, there are bats like these that eat fruits, other bats that eat insects, and even some bats that eat fish! But remember, if you find them in a tent, they're fruit eaters.
